Poem

“We Are”

By Emily Riffle

Desciption of Submission: “We Are is a short free-style poem basically advocating acceptance of LGBTQ. It also shows my own determination to fight for acceptance.” - Emily

Blood pours from the walls that surround me,
The blood of those who didn’t make it,
The ones who couldn’t handle the hatred.
The alienation.
The pain.

I watch their lives on TV,
Watch the scenes of hatred that drove them to their end.
That killed them.

And that almost killed me.

I throw the small, yellow plastic bottle back into mom’s medicine cabinet and take a sip of water, smiling and gaining strength from the knowledge of something pure in this corrupted world.

I am strong.
I have the will to stand up to my oppressors and for those like me.
Those who just want to love who they want and be who they are,
Without the world condemning them.

We. Are. Strong.
