“Gay Pride”

I am proud of you.

And I am not sure if I say that enough, but please know that I mean it.

I am proud of the way you walk.

With your head held high,

Even when people whisper behind you.

I am proud of the way you break down stereotypes,

Challenging prejudices and falsehoods every day.

I am proud of the way you keep your cool

When someone makes a rude comment about you,

Or calls you a derogatory name.

I am proud of the way you comforted your mother

When she cried after you first came out to her,

Even though no one would have blamed you

If you were upset with her too.

I am proud of the way you came out to me.

I know that took courage,

And I know that means you value our friendship enough

Not to want to keep secrets any longer.

And I am proud of the way that you never let anything stop you.

Not the stigma surrounding your sexuality,

Not the negativity of the people you know,

Not the battles you have to face every day.

I am proud of the way you keep living your life in joy.

And I am proud that you have given the world a chance to get to know you,

And to know the person who you are.
